![]() ![]() The ever-reliable Christopher Eccleston is impressive in the title role, a man from humble beginnings as a pig farmer, and thence torn between his scholarly ambitions at the nearby Christminster college and his burgeoning love for cousin, Kate Winslet's Sue Bridehead. Winterbottom's cast is pretty much flawless. His film also looks authentic, evoking the late 19th century era and the scholastic settings of Hardy's Christminster (actually Durham and Edinburgh) beautifully via Eduardo Serra's lush cinematography. ![]() Of course, given the inherently tragic nature of Hardy's work, it would be remiss of Winterbottom not to be able to get the emotions roused in depicting the themes of unfulfilled ambition, fated love, social convention and spiritual penance, and, primarily via some excellent acting turns, this he most certainly does. Tom Keogh, Īlthough we, the viewing public, have over the years been bombarded with period dramas of varying quality, on both the big and small screens, every now and then a 'superior' depiction emerges, such as this 1996 film directed by 'eclectic Brit' Michael Winterbottom, based on Thomas Hardy's novel. Welcome to Sarajevo proved that Winterbottom needs a whole other level of personal involvement to make a film that inspires him. Winterbottom takes an oddly lean approach to Hardy's deterministic story, which leaves a viewer feeling short on emotion just when one needs it for the from-bad-to-worse third act. When the two enter into an illicit union, they are condemned to the margins of society, ultimately resulting in a horrifying tragedy. ![]() Kate Winslet is enlisted to play his cousin Sue Bridehead, a young woman with suffragette leanings and a position as a teacher's assistant. Christopher Eccleston plays Jude Fawley, a self-educated stonemason who holds the dream of attending university but identifies with the working class. This curiously dry adaptation of Thomas Hardy's last novel, Jude is a good example of Michael Winterbottom's inability to make a particularly good film until Welcome to Sarajevo.
